A Simple 7-Day Litter-Box Observation Checklist

You do not need a complicated tracker to learn your cat’s normal litter-box routine. A consistent seven-day check can create a useful baseline and make later changes easier to notice.

What to record each day

  • the number of litter-box visits you observed
  • the number and approximate size of urine clumps
  • stool frequency and appearance
  • any unusual odor
  • digging, hesitation, straining, or vocalizing
  • appetite, water intake, and general behavior
  • any color-changing litter result, if applicable

Keep the setup consistent

Use the same litter depth, scoop at similar times, and avoid changing food, litter, box location, and cleaning products all at once. Compare fresh clumps and record any medication or routine changes. Consistency makes comparisons more meaningful.

Look for the usual range, not a perfect number

At the end of seven days, look for your cat’s normal range rather than expecting every day to be identical. One isolated difference may have a simple explanation. A repeated change, especially when paired with altered behavior or litter-box use, is more useful information to share with a veterinarian.

Multi-cat homes need extra context

A shared box cannot reliably identify which cat produced each clump. Individual app profiles help organize observations, but identification may require separate boxes, short observation periods, or veterinarian-guided monitoring.

When not to wait

Repeated straining, frequent trips with little or no urine, blood, vomiting, or sudden distress should not wait for the seven-day review. Inability to urinate is an emergency.
